How to read a reference before you search

Brands rename collections and sellers invent nicknames. The reference is the string printed on the case or the papers. Search that, then confirm the dial, bezel, and bracelet in the photos.

Rolex references changed length when the cases changed. A 16610 and a 126610LN are both Submariner Dates, and they are not the same watch. A marketplace title that says only “Submariner” is unfinished. Ask for the number between the lugs.

Omega and some others use long dotted codes. The last digits often encode dial and bracelet. Dropping them widens the search into a family, which is useful, and then you have to narrow it with the photos.

Grand Seiko and Seiko look similar in a search box and are not the same market. SBGA211 is a Snowflake. A seller who writes “Grand Seiko” on a Seiko 5 is hoping you will not check. The reference settles it.
