What box and papers actually change

Box and papers are not the watch. They are proof and packaging. On liquid steel sports watches they still move the ask, because the next buyer will ask the same question you are asking now.

Papers matter more than the outer box. A dated warranty card or an archive extract ties the watch to a year and, sometimes, to a first market. The box is cardboard or wood. It helps, and it is replaceable in a way the card is not.

The premium is widest on references people buy to hold, not to wear hard: current Rolex sports models, Nautilus, Royal Oak, and anything still close to retail. On a ten-year-old dress watch that has already been polished, a missing box rarely deserves a large discount, and a full set rarely deserves a large premium.

Watch-only is not a defect. It is a different product. If you plan to keep the piece, the discount can be the entire point. If you plan to sell within a few years, price the missing set as a cost you will pay again on the way out.
